Day 1-2 Slot Loevestein

We start the road trip with a short half-hour drive and spend the night near Slot Loevestein. In the late afternoon or evening, you can visit the small fortified town of Woudrichem, rich in history with its narrow streets, Martinus Church, Molen Nooit Gedagt, and the prison gate. On the second day, you can visit this medieval castle, which was the state prison of the Netherlands and is famous for the escape of its prisoner Hugo de Groot in 1621.

Day 2-6 Veluwe

After soaking in some culture, you continue your journey towards the Veluwe. Driving along the highway, you will already feel like you’re in a beautiful environment, but it gets even better when you stop for a walk or bike ride. You can spend a few days here, walking or cycling in the Hoge Veluwe National Park, and keep an eye out for deer, red deer or wild boars. You need an entrance ticket for the national park, which also houses the Kröller-Müller Museum, a unique museum in every season. You can also visit Radio Kootwijk, a place where technology, nature, and architecture come together. This former radio station played a crucial role in Dutch communication history. The characteristic and imposing building is set in a rugged environment and protected nature reserve. Nearby, you’ll find Kootwijkerzand, heaths and sand drifts, unique in their vastness in the Netherlands. If you’ve had your fill of nature, you can take a trip to Apeldoorn and visit Paleis Het Loo, an original 17th-century palace of the House of Orange, showcasing how its inhabitants lived and worked in those times.

Day 6-8 Arcen

Today, we leave Gelderland and head to Limburg. The journey through Limburg starts in Arcen, a cozy and charming village in northern Limburg. From April to October, wander through the castle gardens, a versatile flower and plant park, or visit the old working watermill for a tour or relax on the terrace with a snack or drink. Arcen is also home to the Hertog Jan brewery, where tours are available. For fun and adventure, visit the Toverland amusement park.

Day 8-9 National park de Meinweg.

JTraveling further south, you can make a stop at National Park De Meinweg. This unique park features a terraced landscape with three steep transitions between the terraces, created by erosion of sediments deposited by the Rhine and Meuse in the distant past and by earth crust movements. Perpendicular to the terraces, two stream valleys have formed. Between the streams and valleys lie quiet fens, expansive forests and heaths, perfect for a beautiful bike or walking tour.

Day 9 - 12 Maastricht - Valkenburg - Vaals

In the far south of Limburg lies the capital Maastricht, perfect for shopping with its many small boutiques. Be sure to visit the Vrijthof, an impressive square surrounded by numerous terraces and two striking churches. The Markt is another cozy square. Just outside the city, you can walk on the Sint Pietersberg with its beautiful views and take a guided tour of the caves, learning about their formation and how people extracted marl. If you find the caves interesting, you can see more in Valkenburg, with the Municipal Cave or the Velvet Cave beneath the castle ruins, also worth a visit. Valkenburg is a charming town to explore and enjoy its sights. In Vaals, your Dutch road trip suddenly turns international at the tripoint where Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands meet.

Day 12 - 13 Thorn en Landgoed "de Utrecht"

Heading back, visit Thorn, known as the "white town" for its characteristic white facades of historic buildings. Discover why the houses are white while exploring the monumental buildings, historic alleys, and authentic streets. The area also offers beautiful nature reserves for a final walk. Lastly, visit Herberg "In den Bockenreyder," a true authentic Brabant location. Decipher the menu written in Brabant dialect and enjoy the atmosphere and surroundings. Take a walk to the Flaestoren for stunning views over the water and a nature reserve where only animals are welcome.
